How do you create collective wisdom out of individual contributions?

Markup systems require the user to add some meta-data, such as the tagging system of Delicious.

Data emergence approaches shift the effort to the system rather than the individual.

Data emergence is related to the concept of Participation Capture, which Michel Bauwens uses in his manuscript on P2P Theory.

"I'm more and more heading myself into the concept of 'data emergence' where you don't go around bothering people to markup their data as *you* like it, but *you* make an effort to collect their data and make a sense out of it." (http://weblog.infoworld.com/udell/2003/02/06.html)
