Description

"The Pathways through Participation project seeks to explore how and why individuals get involved and stay involved in different forms of participation. It aims to increase knowledge of people’s pathways into and through participation, and of the factors that shape their participation over time. In this project, participation is understood in a very broad sense as the act of taking part in a wide range of social and civic activities, such as volunteering to run a self-help phoneline, being a member of a local community group, purchasing Fair Trade goods, attending a Parent Teacher Association meeting, responding to a local authority consultation, and voting.

The project is a qualitative research project that focuses on the following four questions:

• How and why does participation begin and continue?

• Can trends and patterns of participation be identified over time?

• What connections, if any, are there between different forms of participation and what triggers movement between them?

• How can policy-makers and practitioners enable and encourage different individuals and communities to participate?"
