Pat Conaty:

"Gandhi set out his theory of Trusteeship companies in 1931. Information is in the book Gandhi's Political Philosophy, written by Professor Bhikhu Parkekh, now Lord Parekh and a form chair of the Commission on Racial Equality. This book is superb. But it was Martin Luther King Jr. in his last book I mentioned yesterday that encapsulated what he Trusteeship is about. King inspired the development of the US Community Land Trust movement after his died. The key statement of King's last book Where do we go from here: Chaos or Community is:

'Communism forgets that life is individual. Capitalism forgets that life is social, and the Kingdom of brotherhood in found neither in the thesis of Communism nor the antithesis of Capitalism, but in a higher synthesis. It is found in a higher synthesis that combines the truth of both.'

Gar Alperovitz worked in the 1960s with Dr. King and set up the Democracy Collaborative in Maryland over a decade ago to advance Trusteeship and democratic ownership solutions." (email, May 2014)
