Bio

"Critical and activist researcher, writer and editor. Researcher with the Transnational Institute (www.tni.org) and the Centre of Participation Studies, Peace Studies Dept. Bradford University (University.www.brad.ac.uk/acad/icps), and co-editor Red Pepper (www.redpepper.org.uk) (my main voluntary activist 'job').

My books have been different stages in a grounded and experimental exploration (unfinished of course!), of the possible forms and conditions for democratic, co-operative of forms of economic and political organisation. (Organisational thinking and practice beyond the exhausted dichotomies of capitalist market and centralised state and party)

They include several collaborative books written in the 1980's on feminism and it's insights for rethinking socialism (Beyond the Fragments with Sheila Rowbotham and Lynne Segal) ; innovations in trade union organisation (including A New Trade Unionism in the Making? On the Lucas Areospace shop stewards alternative plan with Dave Elliott) on experiments in transforming local government (A Taste of Power; The Politics of Local Economics, with Maureen MacIntosh)

In 1994, Arguments for a New Left Answering the Free Market Right (which suggests elements of a theory of the socialisation of knowledge which might be useful in the discussion of the commons: http://www.tni.org/tnibook/arguments-new-left

Recently two books which explore experiments to transform the state – from initiatives both in and against the state: Reclaim the State: Experiments in Popular Democracy (Seagulll 2009); Public Service Reform But not as we know it (with Mat Little) (Unison 2009 (http://www.tni.org/tnibook/public-service-reform-not-we-know-it)

I've been involved since 2006 in the creative discussions and exchanges of the occasional, loose network around Networked Politics [1]]
