Sam Firman:

"Drawing on Yancey Strickler’s dark forest theory of the internet, Hine casts a vote for The Hand Made Web: small digital neighbourhoods, largely invisible amid the feed stampede, with one foot planted in the physical world. Hybrid, healthy, human.

Neighbourhood building is always welcome, online or offline. And slowness and simplification can be forms of resistance and prefiguration. But it can also be tempting to construe retreat as resistance. And without a way to knit neighbourhoods of resistance into some kind of networked alternative, I fear ‘abandoned’ spaces will not so much dissolve into dreams as congeal into hegemony."
