Abstract

"This article reviews Ivan Illich's notions of thresholds and proportionality as it applies to the current climate commons crisis. It traces Ivan Illich's life history, his oeuvre, his intellectual formation of ideas and how critically relevant they are to the current problem of climate chaos. It argues that it is vital that Illich's ideas of counterproductivity, proportionality, and thresholds inaugurate a society-wide deep reflection on the recovery of the commons to navigate the climate crisis. It also brings in Gandhi's congruence to Illich's ideas, a critique of industrial modernity in its current form."
