Bio

"Tessy is founder of Participatory City and social designer dedicated to developing new neighbourhood systems that change the way we live our everyday lives. Participatory City has been working on growing a large scale ecosystem of practical participation projects and activity over the last 5 years in a borough of London called Barking and Dagenham and have further initiatives developing in Canada, Scotland and New Zealand.

Tessy's work since 2010 has focused on designing and testing new systems that build connectivity back into the everyday lives of people living in urban areas. Learning from citizen innovators from across the world, who have been inventing new models of local collaboration through practical participatory projects, the Participatory City Approach has aimed to discover what essential new participatory systems are needed to support these types of activity at scale and for the long term. This approach is focused on designing systems that enable a new way of living together to co-create circular neighbourhoods. These are neighbourhoods where we have closer friendships with our neighbours, greater collective agency to do things together and all the public tools we need to co-create and act on all the challenges we face as a society."
